Temperature and Profiles (YSI) from 1993-2000

Abstract:

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a series of Taylor Valley lakes have been monitored for dissolved oxygen and temperature profiles. A YSI dissolved oxygen meter was used to record these measurements in the perennial ice-covered lakes of Taylor Valley. The measurements were collected from 1993 to 2000. Other methodologies to monitor temperatures and dissolved oxygen in lakes are being used.

Methods:

A YSI Model 58 meter with a YSI 5739 probe was used to record temperature and dissolved oxygen profiles. Calibration of the meter and probe was performed in water saturated air, near 0 degrees C, with the salinity correction set to 0 ppt. All measurements were recorded with the same salinity correction (0 ppt). The probe was manually agitated by slowlay moving in an up and down motion (~2 cm). Once the probe stabilized, the data was recorded.

Maintenance:

Metadata and data were migrated into DEIMS to enhance services in 2015 (San Gil).

In October 2007, the data manager (Chris Gardner) removed the DO columns in this table at the request of John Priscu.  The DO values were found to be innacurate, but the table was kept for the temperature readings.

By 2006 metadata was standardized using the EML format, the data was packed as a comma delimited file (csv),  metadata was rendered in a webpage using a XSLT transformation for the EML XML (Gardner and San Gil).

Data from this table was submitted to INSTAAR by John Priscu's team at Montana State University. The raw data files listed under 'file name' are the names of the original files submitted. The 1993/94 and 1994/95 datasets are Microsoft Excel version 6.0 files, and the 1995/96, 1996/97 and 1997/98 datasets are ascii text files. Upon arrival at INSTAAR, the data manager fine-tuned the location codes and limno runs to match those provided in the "locations, dates, codes for lake chemistry, biology samples" file. The file was imported into Microsoft Access on INSTAAR's Unix system, and can currently be found there. The file was then exported in ascii, comma delimited text and MS-DOS text (table layout) to present on the MCM LTER web site. Both of these files are linked to this web page above. Information for  the metadata was obtained from the lktemps.metadata.txt and Metaysi9697.rtf files. The files  were called up using Microsoft Word version 6.0. Text from these files was used to create this page in html format.
